Field skills for birders

Train the skills expert birders see with.

Not another species-memorization app. Flyway trains the way experienced birders actually read a place and a bird — habitat, timing, movement and shape — on the live sightings around you.

Why Flyway

From birdwatching to
watching birds.

Most people look for birds and hope to recognize one. Experts do something else entirely: they run a process of elimination. Habitat, season, range, structure, movement, behavior, sound — each observation rules out possibilities, until only a few birds remain and the answer becomes obvious. They aren't recalling more species than you. They're narrowing the field faster. Flyway teaches that process — as two trainable skills.

Before you see a bird · The Compass

Know what to expect

Arrive with a shortlist, not an empty mind. The Compass helps you plan and predict which birds you're likely to encounter by reading the landscape, season, region, and recent activity before you head into the field.

1

Read the landscape

Where

Water, woodland edge, reedbed, scrub — each habitat carries its own cast of birds. See the map before the bird, and you already know which families are possible.

Predict activity

▲ Peak activity at dawn — plan your window
2

Predict activity

When

Time of day, season and weather decide what's moving. Flyway shows when your target species are actually being reported nearby, so you go when the birds do.

Understand behavior
🌾
Low in the reeds, flicking its tailquick, skulking, rarely in the open
↓ what does that tell you?
Think wrens & sparrows — not open-air flycatchers
3

Understand behavior

Why

How a bird feeds, moves and holds itself narrows the field fast. The Compass trains the behavioral cues experienced birders read almost without thinking.

What

Put it together into a ranked shortlist of what you're likely to see, drawn from live eBird reports near you — so you walk in already expecting the right birds.
